“All Hebrews know that there is nothing honorable about subjugation and defeat. History does not care whether one had the foresight to lose with style. No one is ever forgiven for losing a war.” (Judah Benjamin, p 267)
I highly recommend reading the Interview with Dara Horn in the book’s Reading Group Guide. It details Dara Horn’s research on real U. S. Civil War personalities like Judah Benjamin and many others who are driven to the limits of loyalty and betrayal. I love learning through historical fiction from an intriguing Jewish perspective—for example, 1) who knew knew that Grant expelled the Jews from participating in the Union Army until President Lincoln nixed his ruling; 2) the extensive set-up for the assassination of President Lincoln; or 3) realizing that there were 130,000 Jews in the U.S. during the Civil War era.
How is tonight different from all other nights? For Jacob Rappaport, a Jewish soldier in the Union Army, it is a question his commanders have answered for him: on Passover, 1862, he is ordered to murder his own uncle, who is plotting to assassinate Abraham Lincoln. After this harrowing mission, Jacob is recruited to pursue another enemy agent—this time not to murder the spy, but to marry her. Based on real historical figures, this novel from award-winning author Dara Horn delivers multilayered, page-turning storytelling at its best.
