The Nefesh After School Religious Studies Program

 

The Nefesh After-School Religious Studies Program, 2018-2019

 

After-school religious studies will take place in Scottsdale once again for the 2018-2019 academic year! Nefesh is a program is geared towards students in grades K-4.* It is designed to provide students with an opportunity for supplemental education in Jewish holidays and practice, spirituality, Biblical study that is textually-based, an encouraging learning environment, and a positive student-mentor relationship.

Nefesh is organized and run by Congregation Beth Tefillah in Scottsdale and takes place after school at the J. It is open to all families at Pardes and other schools. Instruction will be provided by Mrs. Aliza Goldenberg and Ms. Yona Weitzner.  Both are professional teachers with extensive experience.

The second semester of the Nefesh program will run from January 14th through May 29th, 2019.

This group is divided into two groups, a younger group (Kindergarten and 1st grade) and an older group (2nd through 4th grade). This will allow for more grade-appropriate instruction. The program is organized as follows:

  • Younger Grades (K-1st)
  • Monday (Taught by Aliza Goldenberg)
    • Mitzvot: Jewish values and commandments.   
  • Wednesday (Taught by Yona Weitzner)
    • Parsha : Review of the weekly Torah portion. Will include content, projects, and questions
    • Jewish calendar: Includes major and minor Jewish holidays and structure of the Jewish calendar.
  • Older Grades (2nd-4th)
  • Monday (Taught by Yona Weitzner)
    • Parsha: Review of the weekly Torah portion. Will include content, themed-art, and questions
    • Jewish Calendar: Covers major and minor Jewish holidays, including textual study of Megillat Esther and the Haggadah 
  • Wednesday (Taught by Aliza Goldenberg)
    • Chumash: Will include textually-based study of Parshat Vayeira, skill-building, and organization of the Torah
    • Mitzvot: This semester will focus on Shabbat and Kashrut

 

All sessions will take place from 3:45-5:15, which will include time for a kosher snack (provided), educational content, and activities. Students from participating schools (including Pardes) may be escorted to the J by Club J staff for a monthly fee or dropped off by parents. Parent pickup at the J is between 5:15 and 5:30 PM.

Program Fees

Fees for the Nefesh program cover the cost of professional fees, books, supplies and snacks and are listed below:

 

One day a week: $325

Sign up for both days (discounted rate): $600

(Does not include walkover fee from Pardes to JCC ($35/month)

For those families wishing to enroll in Nefesh but for whom cost may be an issue, please reach out to us via the contact information below.

No family will be turned away for financial reasons.

CONSENT FORM

In case of medical or surgical emergency, I hereby give permission to the physician selected by a representative of the Nefesh Program to hospitalize, secure treatment for, and to order injection, anesthesia or surgery for the applicant named.  All attempts will be made to contact parent beforehand.

I certify that my child listed above is physically able to participate in all activities that are in conjunction with the Nefesh Program for the period commencing August 2018 through December 2018.

I hereby release Congregation Beth Tefillah, the Jewish Community Center, and the Nefesh program and allied organizations, their agents and employees from any and all liabilities of any nature whatsoever that may arise from his/her participation in any related activity.
