The Nefesh After School Religious Studies Program

The Nefesh After-School Religious Studies Program, 2018-2019

After-school religious studies will take place in Scottsdale once again for the 2018-2019 academic year! Nefesh is a program is geared towards students in grades K-4.* It is designed to provide students with an opportunity for supplemental education in Jewish holidays and practice, spirituality, Biblical study that is textually-based, an encouraging learning environment, and a positive student-mentor relationship.

Nefesh is organized and run by Congregation Beth Tefillah in Scottsdale and takes place after school at the J. It is open to all families at Pardes and other schools. Instruction will be provided by Mrs. Aliza Goldenberg, Mrs. Chanie Honig, and Mrs. Miriam Campbell.  All are professional teachers with extensive experience.

The first semester of the Nefesh program will run from August 20th through December 19th, 2018.

This year, the program is expanding to two groups, a younger group (Kindergarten and 1st grade) and an older group (2nd through 4th grade). This will allow for more grade-appropriate instruction. We are also starting the program slightly earlier to enable an earlier end to the day. The program is organized as follows:

  • Younger Grades (K-1st)
  • Monday Maagal Hashana: The Jewish Calendar, including days of the week/creation, months, holidays, and themes of the month
  • Wednesday Parsha : Review of the weekly Torah portion. Will include content, projects, and questions
    • Aleph Bet Mitzvot: Jewish values and commandments, organized according to the Hebrew alphabet
  • Older Grades (2nd-4th)
  • Monday Parsha: Review of the weekly Torah portion. Will include content, themed-art, and questions
    • Mitzvot: Jewish values and commandments
  • Wednesday Maagal Hashana: The Jewish Calendar, including special features of the month and holidays
    • Chumash: Will include textually-based study of Parshat Vayeira, skill-building, and organization of the Torah

All sessions will take place from 3:45-5:15, which will include time for a kosher snack (provided), educational content, and activities.
