The Nefesh After-School Religious Studies Program, 2019-2020

 

After-school religious studies will take place in Scottsdale once again for the 2019-2020 academic year! Nefesh is a program geared towards students in grades K-4.* It is designed to provide students with an opportunity for supplemental education in Jewish holidays and practice, spirituality, Biblical study that is textually-based, an encouraging learning environment, and a positive student-mentor relationship.

Nefesh is organized and run by Congregation Beth Tefillah in Scottsdale and takes place after school at the J. It is open to all families at Pardes and other schools. Instruction will be provided by Mrs. Aliza Goldenberg and Ms. Yona Weitzner.  Both are professional teachers with extensive experience.

The first semester of the Nefesh program will run from August 19th through December 19th, 2019.

This group is divided into three groups, a younger group (Kindergarten and 1st grade), an intermediate group (2nd grade), and older group (3rd through 4th grade). This division allows for grade-appropriate instruction. The program is organized as follows:

  • Younger Group (K-1st)
  • Monday (Taught by Yona Weitzner)
    • Jewish Calendar and Holidays: Includes major and minor Jewish holidays and structure of the Jewish calendar. 
    • Parsha: Review of the weekly Torah portion.  Please note that during busier holiday months, Parsha may be taught on Wednesdays
  • Wednesday (Taught by Aliza Goldenberg)
    • Halacha: Jewish law
    • Middot: Jewish character 
  • Intermediate Group (2nd grade) and Older Group (3rd and 4th grade)
  • Grades 2-4 will be combined on Mondays and will split for instruction of Chumash on Wednesday and Thursdays
  • Monday (Taught by Aliza Goldenberg).  
    • Jewish Holidays: Includes major and minor Jewish holidays.
    • Halacha: Jewish law.  Will often coincide with laws pertaining to Jewish holidays.
    • Parsha: Review of the weekly Torah portion. Please note that during busier holiday months, Parsha may not be covered.
  • Wednesday (Grade 2 only, taught by Yona Weitzner)
    • ChumashWill include Chumash skill-building to start and will advance to Parshat Lech Lecha as the semester and year progress.  
  • Thursday (Grades 3-4 only, taught by Yona Weitzner)
    • Chumash: Will continue Chumash skill-building along with study of Parshat Chayei Sarah

Ambassadors from Yeshivat Makor Chaim will also periodically participate in Nefesh instruction and holiday celebration.

Please note the new location of the younger class within the BJE room, which is located next to the library.  This should streamline drop-off, pickup, and logistics, as all Nefesh activities will be in the same general vicinity.  This room also provides improved acoustics and an environment more conducive to learning.

Starting this year, Bnot Sherut will be available to escort students from Pardes to the JCC at no additional fee to families. Transportation is also available for students from other schools to the J.  Please contact the JCC for more information on this service.

All sessions will take place from 3:45-5:20 PM, which will include time for a kosher snack (provided), educational content, and activities. Parent pickup at the J is between 5:20 and 5:30 PM.

Program Fees

Fees for the Nefesh program cover the cost of professional fees, books, supplies, room rental, and snacks and are listed below:

 

One day a week: $325

Sign up for both days (discounted rate): $600

 

For those families wishing to enroll in Nefesh but for whom cost may be an issue, please reach out to us via the contact information below.

No family will be turned away for financial reasons.

CONSENT FORM

In case of medical or surgical emergency, I hereby give permission to the physician selected by a representative of the Nefesh Program to hospitalize, secure treatment for, and to order injection, anesthesia or surgery for the applicant named.  All attempts will be made to contact parent beforehand.

I certify that my child listed above is physically able to participate in all activities that are in conjunction with the Nefesh Program for the period commencing August 2018 through December 2018.

I hereby release Congregation Beth Tefillah, the Jewish Community Center, and the Nefesh program and allied organizations, their agents and employees from any and all liabilities of any nature whatsoever that may arise from his/her participation in any related activity.
