The Nefesh After-School Religious Studies Program, 2019-2020

 

After-school religious studies will take place in Scottsdale once again for the 2019-2020 academic year! Nefesh is a program geared towards students in grades K-4.* It is designed to provide students with an opportunity for supplemental education in Jewish holidays and practice, spirituality, Biblical study that is textually-based, an encouraging learning environment, and a positive student-mentor relationship.

Nefesh is organized and run by Congregation Beth Tefillah in Scottsdale and takes place after school at the J. It is open to all families at Pardes and other schools. Instruction is provided by Mrs. Aliza Goldenberg and Ms. Yona Weitzner, both professional teachers with extensive experience, and Meni Rottman, our wonderful and insightful Ambassador from the Mekor Chaim Steinsaltz Ambassador Program.

The second semester of the Nefesh program will run from January 13th through May 27th, 2020.

This group is divided into two groups, a younger group (Kindergarten and 1st grade) and an older group (2nd through 4th grade). This division allows for grade-appropriate instruction. The program is organized as follows:

  • Younger Group (K-1st) - Meets in BJE Room 104 at the JCC
  • Monday 
    • Chumash (taught by Meni Rottman): students will study parshiyot Breishit and Noach.
    • Jewish Calendar and Holidays (taught by Yona Weitzner): Includes major and minor Jewish holidays and structure of the Jewish calendar. 
  • Wednesday (Taught by Aliza Goldenberg)
    • Halacha: Jewish law
    • Middot: Jewish character
    • Parsha: Review of the weekly Torah portion. Please note that during busier holiday months, Parsha may be omitted.
  • Older group (2nd through 4th grade) - Meets in the Library at the JCC
  • Monday (Taught by Aliza Goldenberg).  
    • Jewish Holidays: Includes major and minor Jewish holidays.
    • Halacha: Jewish law.  Will often coincide with laws pertaining to Jewish holidays.
    • Parsha: Review of the weekly Torah portion. Please note that during busier holiday months, Parsha may be omitted.
  • Wednesday (Grade 2 or beginner to Chumash only)
    • Pirkei Avot (taught by Meni Rottman): Ethics of The Fathers.  Tractate of Mishna that pertains to ethics, interpersonal relationships, and advice for a life well-lived.
    • Chumash (taught by Yona Weitzner): Will include Chumash skill-building to start and will advance to Parshat Lech Lecha as the semester progresses.  
  • **For 3rd and 4th grade students or those with background skill in Chumash:  there is not currently a separate class for this group, but one can be put together if there is enough expressed interest.  Please email ariellafriedmanmd@gmail.com if you would be interested in such a class.

 

All sessions will take place from 3:45-5:20 PM, which will include time for a kosher, nut-free snack (provided), educational content, and activities. Parent pickup at the J is between 5:20 and 5:30 PM.

Approximate Schedule:

3:15-3:30 - Bnot Sherut escort Pardes students and arrive at JCC

3:30-3:50 - Snack

3:50-5:20 - Instruction

5:20-5:30 - Pickup

 

Transportation:

From Pardes Jewish Day School:  Our fabulous Bnot Sherut escort students from Pardes to the JCC at no additional fee to families. Please notify Ariella Friedman if your child will be absent on any given day, so that we can account for all of the children's whereabouts.

From Other Schools: Transportation is also available for students from other schools to the J.  Please contact the JCC for more information on this service.  For families bringing their children personally, children can be dropped off between 3:30 and 3:45 PM (approximately), depending on the arrival time of the group/supervisors from Pardes.

Program Fees

Fees for the Nefesh program cover the cost of professional fees, books, supplies, room rental, and snacks and are listed below:

 

One day a week:

$300 (CBT Member), $350 (CBT Non-Member)

Sign up for both days (discounted rate):

$575 (CBT Member), $625 (CBT Non-Member)

 

Please note that pricing for Spring semester is higher  due to increased number of sessions. Starting this semester, a discount is being provided to member families of CBT.

 

For those families wishing to enroll in Nefesh but for whom cost may be an issue, please reach out to us via the contact information below.

No family will be turned away for financial reasons.

In case of medical or surgical emergency, I hereby give permission to the physician selected by a representative of the Nefesh Program to hospitalize, secure treatment for, and to order injection, anesthesia or surgery for the applicant named.  All attempts will be made to contact parent beforehand.

I certify that my child listed above is physically able to participate in all activities that are in conjunction with the Nefesh Program for the period commencing August 2019 through December 2020.

I hereby release Congregation Beth Tefillah, the Jewish Community Center, and the Nefesh program and allied organizations, their agents and employees from any and all liabilities of any nature whatsoever that may arise from his/her participation in any related activity.
