6:30 PM - 9:00 PMPrivate Residence“For a real bargain, while you’re making a living, you should make also a life.” Aaron Bronson
Our August 17th book, The Jew Store by Stella Suberman, begins in 1920 when the Bronsons move to a tiny town in Tennessee. “Alleh shlosser ken men efenen mid a goldener shlissel” (All locks can be opened with a golden key). Their story definitively unlocks an aspect of immigrant Jewish life in small town America.
When Aaron Bronson, an immigrant Jew born into poverty, orphaned, fleeing pogroms and Cossacks, doesn’t adapt to the peddler/pushcart life in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, he heads south to find his way in America. He and his family eventually return to NY in 1933, but our story covers how Aaron and his family thrive until the Depression takes hold and chain stores take over merchandising. We get to witness and feel the political, economic and societal thinking of the early 20th century.
Please join us promptly at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, August 14th at the home of Pam Steinberg.
To confirm your participation, please RSVP by text to Pam at 602-770-2110. She will provide her address, directions and gate code.
