"I have written this novel to show the depth and breadth of the Inquisition in the Americas. Many of the characters are real like Hernando Alonso, who was the first Jew to arrive in Mexico with Hernan Fortez in 1521; Tomas Trevino de Sobremonte, who was the only one burned alive in the auto-de-fe of 1649 who refused to reconcile with the church, and the Inquisitor Dr. Juan Saenz de Manzoca, a very cruel man. Others are the ordinary people who survived under difficult circumstances. I want to tell their story." Marcia Fine

I've been looking forward to discussing Hidden Ones, A Veil of Memories. I met Marcia Fine years ago at a local author's group. She really connected and is well recognized as a multi-award-winning author. You'll understand why when you read her ninth novel, Hidden Ones. We're so lucky to have her as our guest speaker. We may also have visitors from Chabad of the East Valley in Chandler.

Hidden Ones reflects Marcia's extensive research on cultural practices and customs of the 17th century Sephardic Jews in Mexico. She portrays the Jewish religious rituals practiced by conversos and the tension and difficult decisions facing them due to their life under the eyes of the Church authorities during the horrific Mexican Inquisition. You'll be captivated by her descriptions, attention to detail and well-defined characters. You'll especially enjoy the strong voices  of Clara, the grandmother, and Celendaria, the granddaughter, in this compelling Crespin family saga about a persecuted family struggling to sustain their traditions by taking huge risks.

History, romance and intrigue--and one more theme: how persecution and fear create a veil of memories affecting the psyche of future generations.
