These devices are Shabbat-friendly and have been utilized by other synagogues in the Phoenix metro area. The device is also utilized in other cities and has the approval of local and national rabbis. The device is outfitted with an FLIR infrared heat detection camera system that allows the traffic signal to be activated automatically, after a short delay. To be detected by the signal, stand within the painted white box on the sidewalk/street corner. The device will detect the pedestrian if he or she remains in the detection zone for 6 seconds. This will indirectly trigger the system to allow a longer duration for the light in the North-South direction. Once the light changes, there will then be ample time to cross, and there will be no need to press a button on the traffic signal.

 

We strongly encourage everyone to utilize the crossings at the traffic lights and to avoid crossing at undesignated areas, in order to keep everyone safe.
