"I want you to look at me," he spurted. "I want you to see me, really see me, and then afterward tell me." (Dov G to Avishal Lazar, A Horse Walks into a Bar)
Israeli author, David Grossman, won the 2017 Man Booker International Prize for A Horse Walks into a Bar. I spite of the title, this novel is not funny. It's short, but intense, and quite harsh--off-putting in the beginning, but will break your heart by the end. It's almost the opposite of our January book, Incredible! Comparing the lives of Rabbi Yossi Wallis and Dov Greenstein should make for a discussion with great depth, especially after last month's consideration of role models in our lives.
The setting is in a claustrophobic comedy bar in Netanya, filled with an audience that is a cross section of Israeli society. The writing is succinct, but searing, revolving around the joyless humor and the violence Dov experienced in his life. "How, in such a short time, did he manage to turn the audience, even me to some extent, into household members of his soul? And into it's hostages?" (Avishai, p 57)
There's a multitude of reviews on the web. I recommend the following:
